Nelson told KLIN radio in Lincoln, Nebraska, Thursday that an attempt at compromise doesn't get to the fundamental issue of barring federal funding for abortions.
Nelson says without further changes the compromise isn't sufficient.
It sounds like Nelson is trying to go for the full Stupak amendment. Why shouldn't he? Reid and Obama have already made it clear that they will give any conservative Democrat anything they could possibly want to get a bill labeled “health care reform” passed.
Of course, the biggest rollback of a woman's reproductive rights in a generation is not all Nelson wants:
But Nelson said abortion wasn't his only concern and he didn't see how the Christmas deadline could be met.
We wouldn't need to be worrying about Ben Nelson's mountain of demands right now if they would just go with reconciliation. I have heard the strategy called risky, but the truly risky plan is to keep letting Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson carve the bill down to nothing.
