KY Sen: Randy Paul Maintains Strong Lead in GOP Primary, Conway Surges with Dems

Randy Paul is in a dominate position in the Republican primary for the open Kentucky Senate seat (currently held by the retiring Jim Bunning) according to a new SurveyUSA poll. Paul leads his closest primary opponent, Secretary of State Trey Grayson, by 15 points. Paul has the support of 45% of likely Republican primary voters compared to Grayson's 30%. This is effectively no change from where the race stood last month.

Paul's continued strong showing is impressive given that Grayson has long be viewed as the Republican party establishment favorite in the primary. Grayson has the important backing of Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

On the Democratic Side, the race has become much closer. Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo has a small lead over Attorney General Jack Conway 35%-32%, but with 21% undecided. This most recent poll shows Conway surging against Mongiardo. An earlier SurveyUSA poll of the race from March 3 had Mongiardo with a dominant 45%-27% lead over Conway. Mongiardo has managed to drop 10 points in just over month, giving Conway a good shot at winning the race, making the contest as it currently stands a toss-up.
